Fun Family Activities for Halloween

There are plenty of options for family activities during the Halloween season and in the fall season. Family activities are good for creating quality time together. Here are a few choices for some family fun.

Throw a dance party. You can find many types of Halloween-themed CDs at various grocery or costume stores. Find one with several Halloween dance songs like “The Monster Mash” and have a family dance and costume party. Set out some snacks. Your kids will have a great time watching you dance and act crazy, even if they don’t themselves.

Go visit a nearby pumpkin farm or pumpkin patch. Farms that grow pumpkins tend to have entertainment and festivities in the month of October. Attractions such as live music, crafts, hayrides, corn mazes and kids games are offered. Part of the enjoyment is in being able to pick your own pumpkin as a family, either out of a huge patch or sometimes off the vine.

Play the game "Clue". Halloween is all about the mysterious so why not play a mystery game. Playing the game Clue will provide some mystery and a time that all the family can be together.

Get to the computer or grab a pencil and paper and write a Halloween story together as a family. You can make great memories with this one. Have everyone in the family pick a character. They can even make inanimate objects like corn or pumpkins come alive. As a family, pick the setting and story plot and you’ll be surprised how each family members has a unique contribution to the story. Make sure you keep each years story in a binder or scrapbook, to read again for the next year.

Relax as a family and watch Halloween movies together. Make movie night a tradition. Depending on the age of your kids or if you only have a spouse, share a special annual movie such as “Bedknobs & Broomsticks”, “A Nightmare Before Christmas”, John Carpenter’s “Halloween” or “It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown.” As a special treat make popcorn with orange popcorn salt and serve it with orange soda or serve any orange colored treat you can think of. Put the family in the mood by substituting your normal light bulbs with orange of black ones.

Carve or Paint a Pumpkin Together. Of course carving the jack-o-lantern is a Halloween tradition, so that is always one thing that you can do as a family. Kids love it when their parents are involved with them in that activity. But since it is messy, sometimes dangerous and the jack-o-lantern only lasts a few days, you can just paint the pumpkin instead. This is one of the latest Halloween rages. Even the littlest of kids can get involved. Take your time and use your imagination. For something different, have each family member paint a pumpkin. You will have a memorable experience and a family of pumpkins to display. Put them on your porch or deck.

Go On A Nature Walk. Here is an idea that will give you some exercise. Locate a nearby hiking trail or park and take a walk, while collecting autumn type objects such as leaves and pinecones or even interesting rocks. Make a display in a large clear glass bowl when you get home. It will be a memorable center piece.
